Turkish FM admits preconditions

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has openly admitted that the unsettled Nagorno-Karabakh conflict accounts for the failed Armenian-Turkish reconciliation, Naira Zohrabyan, a member of the Armenian delegation to the CE Parliamentary Assembly, told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
"I asked him the following question: `Under Azerbaijan`s overt pressure your country caused the reconciliation process to reach stalemate. What are your guarantees that, as chair of the Ministers` Council, Turkey will not follow the principle different than the European ones or disregard modern values?` He did not give a clear answer, but said that, in signing the protocols, Turkey was pursuing three goals, namely, reopening of border, historical reconciliation and settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Zohrabyan said. In his speech the Turkish FM pointed out that 20% of Azerbaijan`s territory are occupied. "He admitted that preconditions were actually a `starting point` for Turkey," Zohrabyan said.
Last November Turkey took over the chairmanship of the CE Ministers` Committee.
Armenian News-NEWS.am reminds readers that Armenia and Turkey attempted to normalize relations in autumn 2009. However, official Yerevan has to suspend the process because of Turkey linking reconciliation to settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

An unknown criminal in the Russian town of Samara killed Saturday, Armen Sahakyan, an ethnic Armenian the Russian news website kp.ru reported.
Sahakyan reportedly died of a stab wound inflicted on the chest.
The perpetrator immediately fled, leaving the victim alone. Sahakyan had to catch a car to get to hospital on his own, but reportedly died on the way.
Armen Sahakyan was a student at Samara State University's law department.
The case is still unsolved. An investigation has been launched to disclose the possible motives leading to the murder. Sahakyan's relatives have told the police he had no personal enemy. The possibility of burglary is also ruled out as the victim's mobile phone and money had not been taken away.
It's noteworthy that murder was committed on the day of the commemoration protest dedicated to Spartak FC fan Yegor Sidorov.

В Самаре в минувшую субботу, 15 января, в день, когда по всей России проходили акции в память об убитом выходцами с Северного Кавказа болельщике «Спартака» Егоре Свиридове, произошло другое убийство.
Жертвой неизвестного преступника стал 19-летний студент третьего курса юридического факультета Самарского государственного университета Армен Саакян. Злоумышленник ранил Армена ножом в грудь, после чего скрылся. Молодой человек сам остановил попутку, чтобы добраться до больницы. Но по дороге в больницу Армен скончался...
Как передает «Комсомольская правда», Следствие рассматривает все версии от банального грабежа до личных конфликтов погибшего. «Пока преступление не раскрыто», - сообщила «КП» пресс-секретарь следственного управления СКР Елена Шкаева.
Издание приводит подробности произошедшего. 15 января вечером Армен Саакян отправился к другу. Ребята договорились встретиться на остановке «Постников Овраг». Армен сел в трамвай, на котором он обычно ездил в институт. Парень не заметил, как в вагоне за ним наблюдала несколько пар любопытных глаз. Когда вышел на остановке, пятеро отморозков бросились следом за ним. Один из них всадил студенту нож прямо в сердце.
«И как сынок не мог себя защитить? С детства он ходил на карате. Получил кучу медалей?», - плачет навзрыд папа Армена, Андраник Саакян.
Отбиться от обидчиков Армен просто не успел. Неизвестные напали сзади и бросились врассыпную. Деньги не тронули, телефон не взяли. Истекая кровью, Армен кое-как поднялся со снега и побежал к дороге ловить такси. Только вот никто из водителей не захотел сажать в машину раненого, да еще не русского парня. Все-таки один таксист сжалился над ним и решил отвести в больницу. Но было поздно. Армен умер прямо в машине, пишет «Комсомольская правда».
Как сообщают «Новости Тольятти», в блоге Владислава Волкова размещена полная версия интервью с преподавателем, у которого обучался студент- заведующим кафедрой государственного и административного права СамГУ, профессором Виктором Полянским. Виктор Владимирович общался с корреспондентом одного из местных каналов, но сюжет по неким соображениям не был пропущен в эфир. Как написал один комментаторов - «наверху не разрешили». Несмотря на то, что преподаватель не высказывался в пользу «националистической» версии преступления, в которой, впрочем, большинство граждан не сомневаются. Запись интервью была размещена на YouTube.
«В целом это спокойные, доброжелательные и трудолюбивые студенты. Они не вызывают отрицательные эмоции в силу того, что они добросовестные и воспитанные ребята. К числу таковых относился и Армен. Мне очень трудно представить, чтобы это преступление произошло на национальной почве. Сам Армен отличался тихим, спокоыным нравом, так как был воспитанным человеком. Он никогда не дерзил и вообще никаких поводов беспокоиться за его статус не давал. Не понятно, что могло произойти. Пока нет достоверных данных. Как я понимаю, расследование дела только начинается. Но для меня увидеть Армена жертвой той ситуации, что складывается сейчас в обществе, для меня очень неожиданно. Армен миролюбивый товарищ, в интернете есть фотографии, которые свидетельствуют, что он дружил с русскими ребятами. Никаких проблем на факультете ни с ним, ни с другими представителями некорренного населения нет, - заявил он.
Похороны Армена Саакяна состоятся 19 января в 12:00.

ANCA denies hacker attack on its website

The Armenian National Assembly of America (ANCA) has denied reports by Turkish media press about an alleged hacker attack on ANCA's website.
In a statement relased late on Wednesday, the ACNA said its website has not been subjected to any attack and can be reached normally.
Earlier Turkish news agency Cihan reported that ANCA's website had been attacked by a group of hackers called "Code the arts" headed by a famous hacker nicknamed as Jeopardy.
The group is said to have members from Turkey, Chile and Argentine.
Cihan had also explained that the attack came as a response to ANCA's efforts for the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, as well as for the campaign it launched against US NBA superstar Kobe Brayant for advertizing the Turkish Airlines.
It also said that the hackers took control of the website for a couple of hours and placed a picture of the Turkish flag and comments in support of Bryant on the front page of ANCA's website.
The materials placed by the hackers were removed by the website's administration a few hours following the attack.
In a statement issued in mid December ANCA's Executive Director Aram Hamparian had said that Kobe's cooperation with the Turkish company supports Turkey's denialist policy.
"For Armenian Americans, Kobe's contract with Turkish Airlines is like jet fuel on the fire of Turkey's genocide denial," Hamparian had said.
"As 'global ambassador' for Turkey's state airline, he will represent a government that denies the Armenian Genocide and a company that directly supports groups like the American Turkish Council that lobby against American recognition of this crime."

Members of Sardarapat initiative Emil Abrahamyan and Tigran Khzmalyan convened Tuesday a news conference to introduce 20th century Armenian scientists' achievements and inventions.
Speaking of American-Armenian scholars, Khzmalyan said a book entitled "American-Armenians' Contribution to the United States" (author: art critic and publicist Stepan Partamyan) had been published in Los Angeles.
"The book comes to reveal once again that Armenians, if left in a free and fair environment, have a great potential to create," he said.
The book, which comprises outstanding inventions by 20th century American-Armenian scientists, also contains the license details of all those inventions (numbers and dates of registration) as registered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Some of them are listed below:
Gabriel Kazanjyan's hair-dryer, the first sample of Armenian engineering thought, was presented in 1908 and officially registered in 1911.
The practical automatic transmission for car was invented in 1931 by Asatur Sarafyan (Oscar Banker), a great American-Armenian engineer, who settled in the United States after having a narrow escape from the Genocide. His invention (license No. 1.795.464) was put into operation in 1940, being used in Oldsmobile vehicle.
Another Armenian scholar – Arthur Blbulyan – was granted a license (No. 2.348.108) for inventing an oxygen mask for American air forces pilots.
A prominent invention is Alex Manoogian's water faucet which gained a worldwide recognition in 1969.
The Automatic Teller Machine (commonly known as ATM) which forms an inseparable part of modern civilization has been invented by Luther Simijyan. It's noteworthy that Simijyan's coin ATMs and banknote ATMs were granted separate licenses.
Khzmalyan said a presentation of some new inventions will be organized in the near future.
"To the best of our knowledge, world-famous scientist Raymond Damadyan, the author of the magnetic resonance diagnostic method, visited Armenia a few years ago to organize the production of his unique device in our country. Our senior officials, however, made hints to the Diaspora Armenian scientist that he was required to pay a certain amount of money [make a donation, so to say] for the realization of his honest idea. Naturally, he left Armenia, greatly disillusioned and offended," Khzmalyan added.
"The only conclusion to be drawn from here is that our home country can and will have a scientific, educational, economic and social progress in case of involving the potential of all Armenians. But that will not be possible unless Armenia is liberated from the occupationist regime," he added.

Turkish singer Sinem Saniye performed only the national anthem of the United States during LA Clippers-Phoenix Sans basketball match in U.S. Her and other singers’ concert program was cancelled for safety reasons.
The concert was cancelled by two clubs, Turkish Service of Voice of America reports.
It is known the representatives of the Armenian diaspora also had an influence on this decision.

A 16-year-old Armenian, citizen of Russia, was attacked in the city of Krasnodar (south of Russia) on December 13.
The incident occurred while the young man was walking with friends in the center of the city, Yerkramas, newspaper of Russia’s Armenians, reported referring to its sources.
An Armenian was attacked and knifed by about 20 young men. He was taken to hospital with 12 knife injuries. At the moment doctors are struggling to save his life.

Two 15-year-old Armenians were injured in the Dec. 11 clashes in Manege Square of Moscow.
Classmates Gagik and Ruben were celebrating Gagik’s birthday in one of the cafes with their Azerbaijani, Russian and Georgian friends. As soon as they went out, teens were attacked by a crowd. They had to hide under an ambulance car and were saved by policemen. When Russian friends tried to help, crowd attacked them as well, RFE/RL reported.
Armenian young people do not want to disclose their names. Both are at home, while Gagik has to spend at home several weeks. Their Azerbaijani friend was stabbed.
The Russian sources say the clashes may reoccur on December 15. There are reports saying Caucasians plan to organize a protest action in the Russian capital.
Rumors say radicals from the North Caucasian republics are heading to Moscow, though community organizations call on them not to participate in the meetings.
On December 11, 40 people fell victim to racist attacks. Nationalists attacked ethnic Caucasians and Asians on December 12 and 13.

A clash between the Armenian and Azerbaijani youths over Nagorno-Karabakh was prevented in Tyumen.
Several days ago, one of the Armenian students came to classes, wearing a T-shirt with the inscription “Our Karabakh”.
This displeased the Azerbaijani boys and the conflict escalated into the so-called “arrow”. One of the youths came to the “showdown” armed with traumatic weapons and shot a guy in the ear. The conflicting parties intended to have it out next time, however the law enforcers interfered.
The Regional Committee for Nationalities talked with the leaders of Armenian and Azerbaijani Diaspora to calm down the youths.

The experts have made a final conclusion on the death of Armenian student Eduard Margaryan, killed in a scuffle at Moscow N501 school.The forensic examination discovered that the student died from a lethal blow to the heart, causing a cardiomyopathic attack.According to the experts, the boy had a heart disease; however, it was not the leading cause of his death, Life News reports. The examination also revealed his contained no trace of alcohol or drugs.As reported previously, Edik Margaryan was killed at Moscow N 501 School on September 7. According to the Moscow Police Department, Mamed, a 9th grade student of Azerbaijani origin, RF citizen, provoked the scuffle. Local law enforcement agencies say the scuffle broke out between the students not far from the school.Eyewitnesses say that the conflict between the students broke out in the morning. One pushed the other and both decided to have it out after the classes. Both boys had small knives, but neither of them managed to use them. First they were pushing and shouting at each other, and then Mamed hit Edik in the face and the latter fell on the ground. Mamed sat on him and at that moment Margaryan began to have convulsions. According to the preliminary medical examination, Margaryan died from acute cardiovascular insufficiency.The mother of the Armenian victim Eduard Margaryan had earlier told the NEWS.am correspondent, that Mamed ordered his friends to make a video of the scuffle on their mobiles. At the moment, the law enforcement agencies have the video as material evidence.

The Armenian victim Eduard Margaryan, killed in a scuffle at Moscow N 501 School, is a citizen of Russia, Armenian Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Tigran Balayan told NEWS.am.
According to Moscow Police Department, a student of 9th form of Azerbaijani origin, RF citizen, launched the scuffle.
As NEWS.am reported previously, a student of 11th form Eduard Margaryan was killed in a scuffle at Moscow N 501 School. According to the local law enforcement agencies, the scuffle broke out between the students not far from the school. Margaryan was injured in the head in a hand-to hand fighting and died at the spot.

St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church in Glendale was vandalized. A 23-aged Glendale citizen Victor Petrescu, Jewish by origin, smashed the monument outside St. Mary’s church using a sledgehammer, Glendale News Press reported.
The arrested Petrescu told police the Bible says “he must destroy sacred pillars”, Glendale police sergeant Tom Lorenz Lorenz said. On August 11, Petrescu claimed he is Christian. The act of vandalism was not considered a hate crime, as the police questioned Petrescu’s mental stability, the source says.
Rev. Ardak Demirjian stated that church staff and congregants saw the vandal and tried to stop him, but Petrescu raised the sledgehammer and smashed the statue.
The khachkar was placed more than 10 years ago and commemorates 1,700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity by Armenians. The act of vandalism caused $80,000 damage, Lorenz noted.
“Any vandalism caused to something is sad for all the people, all nations and all religions. If he is not normal, we pray for him,” Glendale News Press quotes Demirjian.
Victor Petrescu could face vandalism charges.

A group of Belgian MPs will visit Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh this autumn to discuss the possibility of considering NKR’s independence by the Belgian Parliament, head of Federation of Armenian Organizations in Belgium Gevorg Minasyan told the reporters in Yerevan.
According to him, the Armenian community is actively working with the Belgian MPs on the issue. “In this context their visit to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh is very important. I do not know whether our initiative will be successful, but the process will definitely benefit from the visit of the Belgian parliamentarians,” Minasyan stated. He also stressed that the Armenian community has close ties with many Belgian MPs.

American-Armenians based in Glendale greatly backed US President Barack Obama during presidential elections, but he did nothing in return, Glendale's mayor Ara Najaryan told a press conference in Yerevan.
"Armenians are very much offended that Barack Obama backtracked his election pledge [to recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1915] and he seems to be playing with us," said Najaryan, pointing to Obama's usage of the term Medz Yeghern while referring to the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by young Turks in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire in the beginning of the 20th century.
In his opinion, it was the immense efforts of the Turkish lobby that prevented Obama from keeping his promise.
Further he said he was hopeful that the US President would use the proper term [Genocide] in his commemoration speech next April 24.
Speaking about the suspended process of the Armenia-Turkey rapprochement Najaryan said that the Armenian community held rallies in US against this process fearful that once the Armenia-Turkey Protocols ratified the two parties would create a commission of historians that would discuss the fact of the Armenian Genocide, which would, in turn, mean questioning the fact of Genocide itself.
When it comes to the opening of the border between Armenia and Turkey, according to Najaryan, the Armenian Diaspora should not interfere, and the citizens of Armenia should decide upon it themselves.
Najaryan also spoke about the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, saying that a peaceful settlement of the conflict would be a better option. Though, according to him, together with Armenians living in Armenia the Diasporan Armenians too are ready to fight for Karabakh, should a war be re-unleashed.

Armenian Assembly of America welcomes adoption of Armenian Genocide Resolution by the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
“The committee passed the motion despite a well-funded lobbying effort by the Turkish government supported by major defense corporations doing business with Turkey. Parliamentarians from Turkey and Turkey's ambassador to the U.S. personally weighed in on the committee and the Obama Administration. Major media reported that the Obama White House, which had remained silent on the issue until the day of the hearing, asked Congress to hold off on the resolution. If confirmed, the request would have been a breach of the president's campaign promise,” the AAA website says.
“The truth prevailed today, and the cause of genocide affirmation and prevention has been furthered. The United States record on the Armenian Genocide is clear, voluminous, and unambiguous, a matter recognized by President Ronald Reagan and by President Obama in a number of campaign statements. We commend the leadership of Chairman Howard Berman and all those who supported the bill’s passage, which was introduced by Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA), George Radanovich (R-CA), Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL),” source quotes AAA Executive Director Bryan Ardouny.
“I also want to acknowledge Representatives Brad Sherman, Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Jackie Speier (D-CA), and Ed Royce for the pivotal role they played throughout this process,” added Ardouny. “The pan-Armenian community letter sent a message to Congress that Armenian-Americans speak with one voice when they call on their legislators to affirm the historic U.S. record on the Armenian Genocide and to honor the memory of the American diplomats and humanitarians that came to the rescue of the survivors,” the statement reads.
As NEWS.am reported previously, March 4, U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted Armenian Genocide Resolution. After discussing it for several hours, the Committee held an open voting. Twenty-three congressmen voted for, while 22-against.
