Armenia managed to spark debates on genocide in Turkey

Armenia managed to spark debates

on genocide in Turkey

17:02 • 26.01.11
Even though the Armenian-Turkish normalization process is currently in a passive stage, Armenia has managed to spark a debate on the Genocide issue in Turkey, MP Gagik Minasyan of the Republican Party of Armenia told a news conference Wednesday.
"In the aftermath of the process we managed to move the debate to Turkey. It was a problem we were unable to solve for several decades," he said.
Minasyan characterized the process a triumphant march which will not stop under any circumstances.
Another positive achievement for Armenia, he said, was that the country managed to make the international community realize it is open for a dialogue and has approaches perceivable to all countries (including the United States and EU) except Turkey.
"If a country's policy conflicts with the general logic of international developments, sooner or later certain forces inside that country attempt to bring it on the right path. Situations like this often may split up countries. I don't want to say Turkey may face such threats but that's the general logic," he added.
Speaking of Turkish President Abdullah Gul's recent statement at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), he said the Turkish leader's statement on the liberation of the so-called Azerbaijani lands attests Turkey's policy of imposing preconditions on Armenia.

January 11, 2011 12:38
The world’s oldest winery was discovered in one of the caves in Armenia. A wine press, fermentation jar and a bowl dating to approximately 6000 years ago were found by international group of archeologists in the Armenian cave, Associated Press reported.
The discover is the earliest example of wine making production, said Gregory Areshianan, University of California, Los Angeles, co-director of the excavation.
Information about findings was published in the online edition of Journal of Archaeological Science.
According to archeologists, there was a basin in the cave which could be used as a wine press where people stomped grapes with feet. The experts also found grape seeds, remains of pressed grapes and dried vines.
In 2008 the 5,500-year-old shoe was found in the Areni cave (the same area), Vayots Dzor region of Armenia.

Zaman: Armenian army most combat ready in Caucasus

Zaman:
Armenian army most combat

ready in Caucasus

December 20, 2010 14:03
In his article titled “Armenia keeps on arming” Fikret Ertan, expert of the Turkish “Zaman” newspaper, stresses that despite being a country with the most combat ready army in the Caucasus, Armenia takes steps aimed at military buildup.
“Despite Armenia has small population it is considered a country with the most professional, well-skilled and flexible armed forces in the Caucasus. It is hard to say whether it is true,” he writes. Ertan recalls that in the past Armenia managed to achieve superiority over Azerbaijan “seizing” 20% of Azerbaijani territories.
“Armenia is not satisfied with present military might and is planning steps to strengthen the army. For instance, program modernizing the armed forces has been adopted. It provides for modernization of equipment and development in 2011-2015. It also stipulates development of country’s own defense industry.
Today Armenia has missiles directed at some targets of the opponent, for instance Russian Scud, tactical ballistic missile. There may be other weapons as well, as it is known that Russia had supplied modern arms to Armenia. The country may possibly have long-range missiles,” the expert says, adding that Russia is also providing assistance to Armenia’s defense industry.
Fikret Ertan noted that Armenia’s opponents should draw attention to the mentioned points, especially long-range missiles Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan was speaking about. “Armenia’s military programs are likely to be directed against its opponents and we should take it into consideration,” he concluded.

5,500-year-old moccasin among

2010 most amazing discoveries

December 08, 2010 02:25
The U.S.-based Parade magazine has listed the 5,500-year-old leather lace-up moccasin discovered in Armenia among the most amazing discoveries of 2010
“An international team of archaeologists discovered what’s thought to be the world’s oldest leather shoe in a cave in Armenia. Thanks to the cave’s cool, dry conditions, the 5500-year-old leather lace-up moccasin (about a woman’s size 7) was so well-preserved that even its laces were intact,” the magazine writes.
“Among the standouts from 2010: the six-foot-long, yellow-and-black Northern Sierra Madre Forest Monitor Lizard, a timid relative of the Komodo dragon that eats fruit and lives in treetops in the Philippines, and the Caquetá titi (above), a cat-size, red-bearded monkey found in the jungles of Colombia. Unlike most monkeys, the titi mates for life and purrs like a kitten when cuddling,” the article reads.
“Linguists on an expedition to a remote area of northeastern India were stunned to find the villagers communicating in a completely unfamiliar tongue. Koro, which is used by only about 800 people, may have been overheard just in the nick of time: Few young people speak only Koro, and it has no written form, so it could easily join the several thousand languages expected to die out this century,” the magazine reports.

President Serzh Sargsyan’s speech during the Gala Night of Hayastan All-Armenian Fund

President Serzh Sargsyan’s speech
during the Gala Night of
Hayastan All-Armenian Fund
09:46 • 17.11.10
Dear Compatriots,
Ladies and Gentlemen:

Good evening. I am glad to meet with you again. As you know, this year too, activities of the All-Armenian Hayastan Fund will be aimed at giving rise to Artsakh. Implemented will be projects directed at the improvement of the NK water supply infrastructure as well as development of border villages and enhancement of the well-being of their residents. In this room and in presence of such audience, it would be remiss of me to talk about the importance and expeditiousness of these issues.
However, it would not be inconsistent to speak today about gaining respect and enjoying respect. I am not talking about individuals. I am talking about respect toward the entire nation and the state. As a nation we should continue to gain and enjoy greater respect in the world, achieve higher repute and clout.
The bar we inherited has been set incredibly high. The image of the Armenians and Armenia had been shaped by our forefathers for centuries, bit by bit. Outstanding sons and daughters of our nation glorified their own and their nation’s name all over the world.
Today, we have a new reality: we present ourselves to the world as a state and as a world-spread Armenian nation. It means that one of our major goals should be to make others respect our ability to live in different capitals but be together, our ability to do common work, and global solidarity of the ancient people. And believe me, only few have this all and it undoubtedly deserves respect.
Moreover, our solidarity is aimed at building our home. Our common home must be built solid as rock just as Armenians build their own homes. When I say “our common home” I mean Armenia, I mean Artsakh, I mean our Armenian Motherland. Dear Compatriots:
It’s no secret that there are some states which try to force respect with arms and armies, but it’s also no secret that more often than not they gain hatred instead of respect. It’s not our choice. Bragging is not our choice either. Our choice is to build, to create, and enforce peace. Hence, we have to thoroughly build and rebuild our home. The residents of that home must have military, legal and social protection. We must continue to get stronger, manifesting global solidarity of ten million Armenians. There is no other way to manifest national dignity. It demonstrates our respect toward ourselves which generates and nourishes other people’s respect for us. I have no doubt, that this will bring greater respect to the entire Armenian nation and will open new doors for us.
After Armenia proper, the greatest number of Armenians resides in Russia. Here, you’re well-known, accepted and respected, and that fact endows you equally with honor and responsibility. You know all too well the price of deserved respect and feel its import in your work. I mean that very feeling and underscore the importance of amplifying it.
Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The All-Armenian Hayastan Fund is one of those unique structures which being all-national in scope has been able for years to implement vital projects, and particularly to carry the mission of uniting people around an idea; a mission which heightens our trust and confidence toward our own strength and, in a larger sense, toward our future.
During our meetings with you, I often get questions about the constant maturing of Nagorno Karabakh as a state, about current situation in the NK peace process, about unremitting belligerent calls from the neighboring country and about amplification of our defense capabilities.
My message to you is vey clear-cut: Nagorno Karabakh is a consummate state which is getting stronger by day. Moreover, it’s a much more democratic state than neighboring Azerbaijan. The negotiations over the peaceful resolution of the issue go on and the sooner Azerbaijan realizes that there is no alternative to the recognition of the NK’s right for self-determination, the sooner negotiations will conclude. As for our defense capabilities, it is explicit: we are strong, we are stronger than ever, and grow stronger by day.
The Armenian Army was forged in war. We didn’t instigate war and violence but had to defend our homes. That’s the main reason why we prevailed in that unequal fight. The people who defend their hearths, homes, parents, children, and families are invincible. God our witness, the Armenian people don’t want war, and we will not strike first; however we will take up the gauntlet. We have always been strong on our land, we are strong today, and will be much stronger tomorrow.
Thank you.

This time our strike
will be final and deadly,
Serzh Sargsyan says
November 15, 2010 16:56
NEWS.am posts the full text of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s speech posted on RA Presidential website, after military exercise in Nagorno-Karabakh, November 13.

“Dear Junior Officers,
Dear Soldiers,

The exercises that we observed today have really been very impressive. This is the greatest proof of the fact that every month and every year our army matures even further, becomes more combat ready, more organized, more versatile, and more disciplined. What we have is enough to deal the potential enemy a lethal blow.
However, we will not be complacent about that but will continue to constantly amplify capabilities, skills and armaments of our Armed Forces because developments in the neighboring country are extremely troublesome. They link all their failures and problems to Armenians. Anti-Armenism has become state policy. Unfortunately, they prepare their own people for war; we, on the contrary, prepare our people for peace, explain the importance of solving the issue through peaceful means.
We state publicly, yes, we are ready to make some concessions, ready to solve the issue when the final status of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is determined, i.e. the issue of security of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh is resolved.
And to solve this issue, Officers and Soldiers, you always must be stronger, your combat readiness must intensify, your weapons must be faster, your willpower must prevail, your dedication must be boundless. I have no doubt that if the time comes, we will not only do again what we did in 1992-94 but will go even further and solve the issue once and for all; the issue will be closed for good. What’s to be done to reach our goal?
We must constantly be vigilant, be ready. Nobody should doubt your resolve just as I don’t doubt it, because provocations go on, shooting goes on, people continue to die and not everyone gives this conduct of Azerbaijan a proper assessment. It means that we have to be vigilant, it means that our military exercises, which have been very close to combat situation, must become a warning for the others, while for us they must become a norm of life. During the military exercises, the officers should display their knowledge, soldiers – their abilities, the command should constantly improve their skills.
This is our approach, we have no other way. As Commander-in-Chief, as President of Armenia, Officers and Soldiers, I promise that you will have no need of anything. We will acquire modern gear, which we possess also today, we will have everything to be able to protect the most precious thing we have – lives of our soldiers and officers. What we have is quite enough to fulfill with honor the most important task we face.
We hear warmongering every day, every day we hear threats and attempts to scare us. But we have been there already. My veteran friends, who are present here today, officers of senior generation remember how in the beginning of 1992 only lazy in Azerbaijan was not talking about drinking tea in Stepanakert or Shushi. Their dream remained unfulfilled and many of them took it to the otherworld. At the time they too thought that they were very strong, that they could solve the issue and very fast. We don’t want war and never wanted, but at that time we had to defend our Motherland. If the time comes again, this time our strike will be final and deadly.
I would like to thank you, your parents, your friends, your teachers, all those who sent you here, and long live to all the defenders of our Motherland.”

On national tolerance and Azerbaijani films

On national tolerance and
Azerbaijani films
11:04 • 13.11.10
Head of the Modus Vivendi Center Ara Papian has released a statement over the screenings of Azerbaijani films in Yerevan explaining why he is against the move.
"I am among those who joined the Facebook group against the showing of Azerbaijani films in Armenia recently. Am I really that narrow-minded of a patriot that I would go against cultural interactions? Not at all! A few years ago when - as always, with foreign financing - a survey was being undertaken among Armenian social and political circles on the future of Armenia-Turkey and Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, I myself proposed establishing and developing mutual cultural ties," reads the statement.
Further Mr Papian explains why he has changed his view over such initiatives and exactly what has changed in him.
"What has changed now, for me to be against such a thing? A very important factor. Justice has been violated, that is, the principle of reciprocity has been broken. If there is an intention of showcasing Azerbaijani films in Yerevan, apparently with American money, then a similar event must be organised in Baku as well, that is, a screening of Armenian films. If that is not taking place, then an incorrect message is being broadcast to the entire world; people would think that there is a need of encouraging tolerance only among Armenians.
"I cannot claim that we are a tolerant society in the Western sense. Without a doubt, we ourselves have a lack of tolerance with regards to certain minorities even in our own society. We have yet a long way to go. However, the level of tolerance in Armenian society is quite a few rungs higher than the tolerance of Azerbaijani society. And this refers not only to interactions between our peoples.
"The principle of reciprocity is a most important principle in inter-state relations. Its preservation is imperative. When it comes to international relations, any unjust compromise in our region is perceived as a sign of weakness and could lead to very dangerous consequences indeed.
One must not forget that the latest Azerbaijani film viewed by our society starred a citizen of the Republic of Armenia, Manvel Saribekyan."

U.S. Embassy in Armenia comments on conversations between Serzh Sargsyan and Joe Biden

U.S. Embassy in Armenia
comments on conversations between
Serzh Sargsyan and Joe Biden

October 30, 2010 00:07

The U.S. Embassy in Armenia commented on the YouTube video showing an alleged conversation between U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and a representative of the Armenian community. NEWS.am posts the full text of the statement:
“The Vice President and President Sargsian spoke twice in April 2009. In these calls, the Vice President told President Sargsian the United States believes that the normalization of relations with Turkey and the opening of borders would provide a path to a better future for Armenia and expressed the support of the United States for his leadership. The Vice President expressed the Obama Administration’s support for a Swiss proposal for a joint Armenia-Turkish statement on progress made toward normalizing relations.
President Sargsian did not raise the issue of the content of President Obama’s statement for Armenian Remembrance Day or seek a delay in consideration of House Resolution 252. Instead, the discussions between Vice President Biden and President Sargsian that were recently referenced by the Vice president were about the need to take immediate steps to improve Armenian-Turkish relations. The two leaders agreed that there should be no preconditions to normalizing relations between Armenia and Turkey."
Earlier official Yerevan refuted reports on Sargsyan’s conversation with Joe Biden.

Nagorno-Karabakh recognition bill cuts both ways

Nagorno-Karabakh recognition

bill cuts both ways

October 20, 2010 01:16
The Armenian parliamentary majority accounts for its unwillingness to approve the bill on recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) proposed by the Heritage Party by the fact it may cause damage to the peace process within the OSCE Minsk Group. However, the Parliament’s rejecting the bill will cause even greater damage to the peace process, Armen Rustamyan, a Supreme Body member, Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D), told NEWS.am.
“The Parliament’s rejecting the document will cause irreparable damage to the international recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as well. The world will not enquire into the reasons why the parliamentary majority has rejected the document, but it will register the fact that the Armenian Parliament voted against Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence,” Rustamyan said. He is puzzled at the obstinacy by both the Heritage Party, which is determined to put the bill to the vote, and the parliamentary majority, which is unwilling to seek a compromise over the issue. “After all, we might accept the ARF-D’s proposal to put the document signed by all the political forces on the Parliament’s big agenda. Don’t the parliamentary majority and the Heritage Party understand that voting the document down will put the Armenian side in a most awkward situation?” Rustamyan asked. The ARF-D tried to act as “mediator” between the parliamentary majority and the Heritage Party. However, no compromise was reached.
The Heritage Party intends to put the bill to the vote during the next four-day session of the RA Parliament. The ARF-D stated its readiness to vote for the document. On the other hand, in his interview with NEWS.am, Samvel Nikoyan of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), promised the RPA faction will act is the “most effective way”.

President Sargsyan held a meeting with journalists from Diaspora

President Sargsyan held
a meeting with journalists
from Diaspora
President Serzh Sargsyan held a meeting with journalists from Diaspora. President’s Press Office reported.
"First, allow me to congratulate you all on today’s holiday. Today is Armenian Press Day, and I am happy that it coincides with the festive events going on in Syunik marz.
Dear Compatriots,
Marvelous views and unique historic sites, which you have seen in Artsakh and here in Syunik, undoubtedly have impressed you and back in your home countries you will work with renewed energy and inspiration. But regardless of your job, we are always happy to see our brothers and sisters from Spyurk in our common homeland. I didn’t say “host” you because you are not guests, welcome to homeland, welcome to Motherland.
I view the 5th All-Armenian Journalists Conference entitled “Challenges of the 21st Century: Information Security and Armenian Journalism” and held in the capital of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic as an important initiative and thank you all for bringing to life that wonderful idea.
It is no secret, that the role of the mass media in all ongoing world processes is crucial, particularly the journalist profession. In the 21st century, precise and timely information has become a powerful weapon: its pinpointed application may become decisive for the course of events. From this point of view in all our activities, aimed at the realization of national goals, we attach utmost importance to the Armenian-language journalism and to the publications by our journalists in the world’s leading mass media. The role of the Armenian journalism is greatly stipulated also by the necessity to assist in addressing national issues, particularly, for the task of the world-wide preservation of the Armenian identity.
Journalistic mission is indispensable for the establishment, strengthening and development of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh – second Armenian state – as well as for its international recognition. It should be not forgotten that victories won on the battle fields must be enforced by the victories on the diplomatic arena. At the same time, the role of the Armenian and Diaspora mass media, as well as publications by the Armenian journalists in foreign media is essential for withstanding adversary propaganda and introduction of the issue to the international community. The conference held in Stepanakert presented an excellent opportunity to thoroughly study Artsakh, to learn it from inside, to comprehend Artsakh’s problem and appreciate the worries of the people of Artsakh. I am confident that you will write many pages and create numerous stories on this account.
Further progress in the process of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide can also be expedited only through the increased involvement of media. Mass media can considerably promote just and fair resolution of the Armenian Cause and efficient organization of lobbying activities.
It is also apparent that the media outlets working in Diaspora bring significant input to the task of preservation of the Armenian identity, preservation and dissemination of national culture. We still have a lot to do for the creation of the common All-Armenian information field, for addressing existing problems and withstanding emerging challenges. I am sure that you have had fruitful discussions on these issues in the past days and have adopted appropriate decisions.
Dear Journalists,
You are doing a great and gratifying job. I understand all too well that to publish, preserve and disseminate Armenian periodicals in foreign countries requires great sacrifice; it also means to become organizers and leaders of community life, to engage in the preservation and spread of our amazing mother tongue, hold on to the Armenian identity and Armenian spirit, to have individual profile, national roots, Armenian mentality and eventually to become safeguards of spiritual, historical and cultural heritage of different parts of our nation, promoters of national values, re-inventors of national traditions and facilitators of national development.
We are aware of all the difficulties you face, problems that emerge every day. Those are problems which are first of all related to the challenges that Armenian communities come across in Spyurk; however there are also problems that should be and could be solved through our joint efforts, in close cooperation with the Armenian government.
We are also inspired to see that new Armenian outlets emerge in different parts of the world, including those are being published in foreign languages. This is a nice tendency indeed. We need to get stronger on the international information field – both qualitatively and quantitatively. We counter and will continue to counter lies and falsifications and black propaganda subsidized with the petromoney of our neighbor with our world-wide human potential, and we will prevail because lies and falsifications don’t get far.
We don’t have to persuade ourselves that the international recognition of Artsakh’s right for self-determination has no alternative. But foreigners do need truthful and unbiased information. We don’t have to beautify reality in Artsakh or the Republic of Armenia; however we should be able to prevent picturing everything black. Neither beautification, nor blackening - simply present the existing reality – this is the task that we have to complete together.
Indeed, anti-Armenian fascism is getting momentum in Azerbaijan; it is being executed purposefully and on the highest level. It is not about individual crooks or sick persons suffering from nationalism who can be neglected. We are speaking about the state ideology, according to which “contemporary Armenia was created on historical Azeri land.” That is to say, not only Artsakh but also Yerevan, Sevan, Saint Echmiadzin are “historical Azeri lands.” Hence, according to this logic and in this context, Artsakh becomes a part of so called “historical Azerbaijani lands.” Last time, we ‘learned’ about it yesterday, from the President of Azerbaijan himself.
Why this extreme jingoistic position has been articulated particularly now? Azerbaijan is staggered and infuriated that the international community and the Presidents of the Co-Chair states publicly recognize the right of the people of Artsakh for self-determination. Moreover, free expression of will of the people of Artsakh regarding the political status of Nagorno Karabakh and its results must have binding legal consequences for all parties. This is the very reason for Azerbaijan’s desperate convulsions. They have not prepared their own people for such outcome, and judging from their rhetoric, are not going to.
It is quite clear that the resolution of Artsakh’s problem must be found exclusively through peaceful negotiations. Today, the entire world rules out military solutions, and only Azerbaijan, according to their own words, “does not exclude military solution of the problem.” Is this assertion for internal use only? Probably. But what good does it make to the internal consumers of this assertion, i.e. to the people of Azerbaijan or foreign investors? In Azerbaijan academic humanitarian sciences have become the generators of bellicose proclamations. It’s hard to tell where science ends and puppet show starts.
In case of Artsakh, the “argument” is set forth that some of local toponyms are Azerbaijani (they could at least say ‘Turkish’ or ‘Persian’) and not Armenian. How a settlement could have an Azerbaijani name 200-300 years ago? An entire generation, which tomorrow “shall heroically liberate historical Azerbaijani land”, was educated on this kind of ‘scientific arguments’. That generation will not be allowed to learn that the Armenian toponym for the region – Artsakh was evidenced back in VIII century BC, evidenced by Sarduri II, the son of the founder of Yerevan King Argishti I; and that in I century BC, it was known to the foreign geographers, as Strabon puts it, as “Artsakh province of Armenia,” which had the largest cavalry forces; and that modern Stepanakert was built on the grounds of the Armenian settlement Varakan established in the V century; and that it is a genuine Armenian name which means “Squirmy brook”; and that for centuries the population of the area was homogeneous, populated exclusively by Armenians, which is confirmed also by the 18th century official Turkish sources. Only in the second half of the 18th century, negligible amount of Turkic Muslim nomadic tribes settled here, whose total number at the beginning of the last century hardly reached five percent of the entire population. That generation will never learn that in thousands historical manuscripts, which narrate about Artsakh and its courageous people, word “Azerbaijan” does not exist, couldn’t exist. That word appeared for the first time ever only a hundred years ago, I repeat – only a hundred years ago.
Moreover, in one of his statements, the President of Azerbaijan says that toponym Stepankert exists only because of the name of the “bandit” Stepan Shahumian. One day, the generation which is going “to liberate Azerbaijani land” will turn to its leaders and ask – shouldn’t the student of one of the most prestigious Moscow Universities have been aware of the fact that at the same time the leader of Azerbaijan Heidar Alieyv, accompanied by the storm of applause, voiced the following thought that “the noble personality of Stepan Shahumian is an inspiring example for all generations of Azerbaijani workers”, “And today we state proudly and lovingly (the then leader of Azerbaijan was speaking on behalf of the people of Azerbaijan) that Stepan Shahumian is also the son of the Azerbaijani people.” That’s what Heidar Alieyv said.
Sick fantasies resulted in claiming that Christian churches of Artsakh – Amaras, Gandzasar, are Azerbaijani. Furthermore, they were the first in the world to adopt Christianity. To Turkey they present their new slogan “One nation, two states”, i.e. the Turks and the Azeris are the same people living in two states. Five minutes later, Azeris claim that they are not Turks, or rather were not Turks: used to be Aghvans, used to write books which didn’t reach present days because all those manuscripts were burned by the Armenians; they were Aghvans and built masterpieces of Christian architecture that were expropriated by the Armenians, and finally they changed their language and became Turks. Later, world’s first Christian-Aghvan-Azeris changed their faith and became the most faithful Muslims of the world. Simultaneously, they are promoting the idea that they are direct descendants of the Mar people, who spoke Persian, and are lawful owners of Iran’s Atrpatakan region.
Switch of languages, nationalities and beliefs is their own business; but manifestations of anti-Armenian fascism are our business.
Azerbaijan unleashed the war, and was defeated in that war; Azerbaijan asked for truce (including from the Commander of Karabakh’s forces) and later started to sob about the dire repercussions of that war. As if wars ever bring pleasant repercussions. And on top of that, Azerbaijan adopted conceited stance and started to make demands as if anywhere in the world defeated aggressors are ever allowed to make demands.
To save their faces, Azeris are resorting to quasi-rhetoric that the Armenians won the war with the assistance of another country. No surprise here, how else can they explain the crushing defeat from a small number of Armenians? But they still have no guts to state officially what country or countries they talk about. Spell it. Spell it, so that it can be proved by the facts that you’re lying. What keeps you silent? Now they have decided that Armenia cannot exist on her own and has no future. They feed themselves with these fairytales and got really stunned that the world has quite a different view on a number of issues.
In conclusion, I would like to share with you results of a study recently conducted by the scientists. A large group of genetics and linguists, all of them non-Armenians, has conducted an intricate and lengthy research. According to the latest results, the Armenian language is at least 8000 years old. It means that as a nation we have been around for the last 8000 years. During those 8000 years many have been trying to teach us things from the position of a larger territory, a larger population, and a larger purse. It’s true that at some points they were able to weaken us, but today the absolute majority of them are extinct; they left the stage of history. As for us, we continue our way, calm and confident because we have things to do for the next 8000 years at least.
Thank you, and welcome to Motherland".

World’s longest ropeway opens in Armenia

World’s longest ropeway
opens in Armenia
October 16, 2010 16:43
The world’s longest 5.7-kilometer ropeway called “Wings of Tatev” opened in Armenia on October 16 (photo). It will lead to the medieval Tatev Monastery located in the Tatev village of Syunik region, southern Armenia. The ropeway that can carry a visitor to the Monastery in 12 minutes will also be included in the Guinness Book of Records.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, President of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Bako Sahakyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsan, Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, public figures and numerous guests from abroad attended the opening ceremony.
“We were not pursuing a goal to surprise everyone by building the world’s longest ropeway,” Serzh Sargsyan said addressing the guests. First of all it has major importance for nearby settlements and development of Armenia’s southern regions, he stressed. According to him, construction of the Tatev ropeway will give a considerable impetus to economic, cultural and spiritual development. It is an excellent example of cooperation between state and private sector. The Armenian President expressed gratitude to Ruben Vardanyan, who was the mover of the project, as well as all those who rendered assistance and workers implementing the project.
“Tatev Church is one of the most competitive endeavors of time. To be competitive in the international market, we go studying in other countries, but there are lessons to be learnt in Armenia. Tatev University was one of the most competitive scientific institutions and St. Grigor was one of the prominent thinkers in due time,” the President said.
As NEWS.am correspondent reports from Tatev, white doves were released, symbolizing peace and prosperity, after Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II had uttered a prayer.
The construction of “Wings of Tatev” lasted 11 months. The project was implemented by National Competitiveness Fund of Armenia. A great number of sponsors financed this unprecedented project, however Armenian entrepreneur Ruben Vardanyan’s donation, U.S. $28m is noteworthy.
The U.S. $ 50m project will be of great significance for development of tourism in Armenia.
If a successful PR campaign is launched, the ropeway will attract thousands of tourists to Armenia. The ropeway will have two carriages, each of them intended for 215 people.
The Monastery of Tatev is a 9th century monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church located in south-east of Armenia, near Tatev village, 280 km far from Yerevan. Translated from old Armenian (grabar) Tatev means “give wings” or “fly”.
It was founded in 9th century and was a political center of Syunik kingdom, one of the major educational and scientific centers of Armenia (14-15 centuries). Tatev manuscript school was functioning in the Monastery in the Middle Ages as well.
The Monastery was greatly affected by the 1931 earthquake.
The Monastery of Tatev is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Armenia to participate in all regional energy and economic projects, U.S. top official says

Armenia to participate

in all regional energy

and economic projects,

U.S. top official says

October 04, 2010 08:44
“The slow-moving Nabucco project has received an important boost with a high-level U.S. energy official’s reiteration of Washington’s strong support for the multi-billion euro project over other planned pipelines,” Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review reports.
“The Nabucco pipeline would be a preferable pipeline politically and strategically because of what it offers to European consumers. As for initial gas coming from the Caspian through the Southern Corridor, I think it will be likely that there will be only one pipeline. Sometime in the future as more gas becomes available, and I think more gas will become available, the pipelines could become in some extent complimentary,” Richard Morningstar, U.S. Secretary of State’s Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy, told the journalists in Istanbul.
“Morningstar, however, acknowledged the most important part of realizing the so-called Southern Corridor-the planned pipelines that will carry gas from the Caspian region to Europe bypassing Russia-will depend on gas supplies,” the source sayd.
“Despite the scramble to plan pipeline routes throughout the region, Armenia has been consistently sidelined from playing any role in the process due to ongoing diplomatic conflicts with neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan,” the daily reads.
“I have warm feelings regarding Armenia. That is a shame that Armenia is not part of these projects," Morningstar said. If somehow an agreement is reached, Armenia can become a full participant in the region. And that is in everybody’s interest. It will take time, but eventually Armenia will participate in all regional energy and economic projects,” Morningstar said when asked about whether there is a specific project that the U.S. wanted Armenia to become involved in.
