Two unique photos have been obtained by the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute. The unpublished photos show the panoramic view of Shoushi — Armenian cultural center of Karabakh, after the 1920 massacres and destruction. The photos were taken from different points; in one of them — church of Amenaprkich St. Ghazanchetsots surrounded by destroyed houses and buildings with distinctive Armenian architecture is depicted, second one — illustrates burned and ruined Armenian block of the city with Kanach Zham Church. These photos are unique proof of Armenian pogroms and horrible cruelty committed in Shoushi in March, 1920.
At the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century Shoushi was one of the most strategic cities in the South Caucasus and had crucial role in the Artsakhi Armenians political and cultural life. On March 23, 1920 ruling Musavat party of Azerbaijan organized pogroms in Shoushi and adjacent villages. Khosrov bek Sultanov, the governor of Karabakh region appointed by Azerbaijani government, implemented the state sponsored plan of the extermination of Armenians by perpetrating massacres, robbering and burning houses of the local Armenian population. The Tatar battalion with Muslim population of the city exterminated over 10,000 Armenians as well as destructed and burned the Armenian blocks in the city. Only several thousand Armenians could survive after these brutal killings, as they have escaped from the town. Once prosperous city, with the majority of Armenian population turned into ashes. The demographic image of Shoushi was sharply changed after this atrocious day and it lost the Armenian identity. In Soviet times Shoushi was presented as a historical and cultural centre of Azerbaijan. In 1960-1970 at the initiative of Heydar Aliyev (the first secretary of the Central Committee of Azerbaijani SSR in1969-1982) the ruins of Armenian block as the tragic memory of 1920 events and the vivid evidence of the presence of the Armenian culture and Armenian tragedy were eliminated.
