February 21, Kurdish democratic and cultural union convened a congress on the occasion of native language holiday with participation of Karo Palyan — coordinator of Armenian schools in Turkey.
According to Turkish Atilim e-source, Palyan touched upon of the issues of teaching language in the context of the rights of ethnic minorities. “There are 16 Armenian schools in Istanbul with 3000 children. However, the principals and deputies should be Turks only. Children have to prove they are Armenians in order to study there. Overall 10 000 Armenians reside in Turkey but their children are not allowed to attend our schools. Each morning they make us say, &‘I am Turk, I work hard, I am right.’ I have an impression that we owe to Turkish nation for our existence. Even though we have schools and churches, we live in permanent anxiety. Wherever we hide, anyway we will be pursued. Thus, we should struggle,” Palyan said.
