The Ministry of Defense of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) commented on the reaction Azeri mass media and experts’ reaction to the act by the Azeri soldier Novruz oghlu Ghuseinov, who gave himself up to the Armenian side.
“In commenting on the act by junior sergeant Roman Novruz oghlu Ghuseinov, who served in Infantry Brigade 191 of the Azeri army and gave himself up to Armenian sentries in the northern section of the contact line between the NKR and Azeri armed forces, Baku mass media made a number of contradictory reports. In their turn, some of the so-called ‘military experts’ misrepresented the situation.
“‘We know for certain that Ghuseinov was taken prisoner rather than gave himself up,’ wrote the Azeri ‘military expert’ Uzeir Jafarov. Moreover, taking the traditional ‘attitude’ to prisoners and hostages in his own country, Azerbaijan, as a basis, he does not rule out that ‘using violence, Armenians will make him say on TV that he has allegedly gave himself up to the Armenian forces, as well as tell about ‘neglected condition’ of the Azeri army’,” the NKR Ministry of Defense states.
“By putting the ‘taken prisoner’ version into circulation, the Baku propaganda creates a basis for not only challenging the praises to the Azeri army, but also supposing that the front line of the Azeri army is not properly defended. Otherwise, how was it possible to overcome the defenses of the Azeri army and take commander of the detachment on duty Roman Ghuseinov prisoner without any shot or losses?
“As to the claims that the Armenian side will make junior sergeant discredit his own army, we would like to remind the Azeri propagandists that this method has always been applied by Baku.
“You can be sure that any Azeri solder - including Roman Ghuseinov - that gave himself up to the Nagorno-Karabakh army will feel more secure that in the unit he served, enjoying all the rights under international law, including the right to public expression,” says the statement.
The NKR Ministry of Defense also reports that on August 28, 2010, a bloody incident in the artillery division of infantry brigade 191, army corps #3, claimed six lives, leaving two soldiers injured. The privates Elhan Azizov and Sadygh Mammedov opened fire. “This is the unit contract junior sergeant Roman Novruz oghlu Ghuseinov served in – he preferred leaving his post and giving himself up to the NKR Defense Army,” says the statement.
