Armenia’s military cooperation with the CSTO is not an end in itself and is on the ground of national security and national interests, Armenian Parliament Vice-Speaker Samvel Nikoyan told NEWS.am. According to him, amid Azerbaijan’s increasing military rhetoric especially when Turkey renders its political, economic, strategic assistance and provides the country with military equipment, Armenia should think how to protect its security.
Commenting on the recent Dmitry Medvedev’s statement that Russia will honor its commitments to Armenia within the CSTO, Nikoyan said that formally Nagorno-Karabakh has nothing to do with the organization. However, Armenia has repeatedly stated that it will help Karabakh in case it faces certain military problems. Therefore, the CSTO should interfere in the conflict through its member state - Armenia, he noted. Asked whether Russia’s military interference is real in case of Azerbaijan’s aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh, Nikoyan said shortly, “Yes.”
