aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh

RF President Dmitry Medvedev made it clear that Russia will fulfill its commitments in case of military threat to Nagorno-Karabakh on Azerbaijan’s part, Eduard Sharmazanov, Press Secretary of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), told NEWS.am. According to him, that statement clearly shows Russia’s position.
“This is a message to Azerbaijan that Russia will not accept militant rhetoric and is against a military solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Sharmazanov said. He pointed out that the Russian President’s statement is a clear assessment of Azerbaijan’s actions.
Sharmazanov believes the Russian leader’s statement means that Armenia can rely on Russia. “Armenia defends Nagorno-Karabakh, and Russia is Armenia’s ally. In case of war Russian troops will take part in the hostilities,” he said.
Responding to a question concerning Russia’s actions in case of threat to Nagorno-Karabakh, RF President Dmitry Medvedev stated the commitments within the CSTO (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) should be remembered. “And Russia is very serious about its commitments within the CSTO,” Medvedev stressed. “Regional peace and stability is of high importance to Russia,” he said. The Russian leader stressed Russia does not want the 1990s events in Nagorno-Karabakh and 2008 events in South Ossetia to recur.
