Russia’s activities in the South Caucasus will be in the interests of regional peace and stability, Andrey Areshev, the Deputy Director General, Russian Strategic Culture Foundation, told NEWS.am, commenting on Medvedev’s statement made in Yerevan.
The expert considers that taking into account situation in the South Caucasus, peace and stability will be maintained only in case the balance of regional forces is sustained. “It refers to Abkhazia and South Ossetia as well. I think that Iran will be involved in the list in future. I hope that the countries will finally honor the agreement on supplies of defensive weapons to Iran,” Areshev said, adding that prolongation of Russia’s military presence in Armenia should be viewed in this context.
According to him, prolongation of the Russian base’s deployment in Armenia and expansion of its geopolitical essence is a broad hint to forces trying to turn the South Caucasus into a military foothold.
Talking to the journalists in Yerevan, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia and Armenia are CSTO members and Moscow takes seriously its commitments within the CSTO.
