Parliament of Catalonia recognizes Armenian Genocide
At the initiative of the members of the Barcelona-based Union of Friendship of Armenia, Catalonian parliament members Maria Rosa Fortuni and head of the legal office of the Catalonian parliamentary majority party Jose Samartini, the parliament of the Spanish Catalonia Community passed a resolution unanimously on recognizing the Armenian Genocide February 26, Armenian MFA reported.
This year it’s 94th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the second genocide of our times after massacre of Namibia's Herero, the resolution of the parliament reads.
Ottoman Turkey carried out mass killings of Armenians in 1915-1921. Over two millions of Armenians were evacuated, including the 1,5 million killed.
“In commemoration of the Armenian Genocide victims,
Catalonian Parliament endorses what was done in July, 1987 and the decision of the EU parliament re-approved later in February of 2002 and 2004 that comes in accordance with the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of December 10, 1948, the 1915-1921 events carried out to Armenians should be called a Genocide.
The Parliament of Catalonia also calls on the Government:
1. To support the Armenians in their efforts to reinforce democracy and cooperate with the associations established in Catalonia.
2. To back Armenia-Turkey efforts, as well as the diplomatic efforts of the western states having made the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols possible in Zurich October 10, 2009 to lead the region of the Caucasus to stability, cooperation and freedom.
