“Only velvet coup can take place in Turkey”

It is the first time in Turkey’s history when Commander of Land Troops does not automatically become Chief of General Staff, Turkologist Artak Shakaryan told reporters today, when commenting upon the fact that Turkish President Abdullah Gul did not endorse the appointment of the Chief of General Staff yesterday.
According to the speaker, unless Chief of General Staff is appointed by the end of August, the military can rebel in Turkey.
Shakaryan thinks the Turkish military is unlikely to carry out coup, since they are not so united and resolute as in the 1980s.
“The military can only carry out velvet coup in Turkey in cooperation with judges,” the speaker said adding that it will be no longer possible after September 12, when the Court gets free of military influence under the constitutional amendments proposed by Prime Minister Erdogan.
