The passage of the Armenian Genocide resolution is more important for US President Barack Obama than for Armenians, Armina Darbinyan, Regional Director of the Armenian Assembly of America (AAA), told a news conference today, when addressing the US House's failure to bring H.Res. 252 to a Congress vote.
"If the United States seeks to assume the title of a defender of human rights and democratic values, it should be interested in adopting the resolution," she said, adding that the Assembly does not link the Genocide recognition with either the Armenian-Turkish, or the Turkish-Israeli relations, or even the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
"They are attempting to use us as a tool but we must never succumb to their demands," she added.
"The resolution was not included in the Congress agenda for reasons well known to all of us. The United State dodged the issue to avoid a deterioration of its relationship with Turkey. And Turkish lobby has not been inactive, either," Darbinyan added, expressing confidence that an atrocity like genocide will find a worthy response sometime in the future.
"The first issue to be considered within human rights context is genocide rather than political developments," the expert said. She also didn't rule out the possibility that the issue may be addressed in future congressional hearings.
