Genocide victims first
August 19, 2010 19:40
The first point of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Armenia is the Memorial to Armenian Genocide victims. Immediately after his aircraft landed in the Zvartnots International Airport, Medvedev left for Tsitsernakaberd where he will lay a wreath at the memorial, NEWS.am correspondent reported.
The official Armenian-Russian talks will be held tomorrow. The August 20 private meeting of the Presidents will be followed by the enlarged talks. The sides will sign a number of agreements and treaties on expansion and development of the Armenian-Russian strategic cooperation, in particular in military field, nuclear power industry, trade and economic spheres. The Presidents also intend to give a joint press conference. A protocol on the prolongation of deployment of Russian military base #102 in Armenia is to be signed. Under the protocol, the military base will remain in Armenia for the next 49 years.
On August 20, Medvedev and Sargsyan will also visit Gyumri to participate in the opening ceremony of the military cemetery Hill of Honor, the burial place of Russian officers killed in the Russian-Turkish wars in the 19th century. Thereafter, the CSTO leaders will join the Armenian and Russian Presidents for an informal meeting at Lake Sevan that will be the forth summit of the organization.
On the threshold of the visit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the materials the sides are preparing for the Russian leader’s visit cover the political, military strategic, economic and humanitarian fields – “all the fields typical of the relations between two very close states.”
“Regional and international problems will be discussed as well. We are closely cooperating not only in the post-Soviet area within the CIS, CSTO, EurAsEC, where Armenia has observer status, but also within various international agencies in Europe – OSCE, Council of Europe, U.N. So, since the world situation is not simple now, I am sure the two Presidents have something to discuss in this context,” Lavrov said.
