EuroParliament adopts resolution on Azerbaijan

13:05 / 12/18/2009
December 16, European Parliament adopted resolution on freedom of expression in Azerbaijan.
Recalling the March 2005 statement by President Ilham Aliyev, in which he asserted that the rights of every journalist were protected and should be defended by the state, the resolution calls on authorities to pay special attention to the safety and freedom of journalists and civil-society activists, as well as to address the lack of police investigation into cases of violence and harassment against journalists and the fact that many crimes have so far gone unpunished.
The MEPs also call on Azerbaijani President to review work of law-enforcement state security structures in his country, “especially in relation to the media and other human rights issues, as their work and style are deliberately distancing Azerbaijan from the EU.”
NEWS.am posts the press release text available on European Parliament website.
“MEPs are concerned about the deterioration of media freedom in Azerbaijan and deplore the practice of arresting, prosecuting and convicting opposition journalists on various charges. Parliament urges the immediate release of imprisoned journalists such as Eynulla Fatullayev.
The resolution also deplores the sentencing, on 11 November 2009, of bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizada to harsh prison terms ‘on the basis of highly unlikely charges and an unfair trial.’ MEPs call for their immediate release and a new, fully open and fair trial.
MEPs ask the Azerbaijani authorities' decision to renew the FM radio licences of the international broadcasters BBC World Service, Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.”
