Foreign Relations Committees of the Council of Europe may adopt this summer a statement condemning the vandalism and destruction of the Armenian cemeteries and khachkars (cross-stones) in Julfa (known as Nor Jugha in Armenian), Nakhichevan, Gevorg Minasyan, Chief Editor of the Armenian language monthly Lragir told a press conference today.
In his words, it was due to the efforts of some CE MPs that they were able to bring the statement, condemning those acts of vandalism perpetrated by Azerbaijani, to the Foreign Relations Committee.
Further he said they had also to get their move approved by Armenia.
"But the issue is in the process. The statement will in all probability be adopted in fall," noted he.
Khachkar destruction in Nakhichevan refers to the systematic campaign beginning in 1998 and ending in December 2005 of the government of Azerbaijan to completely demolish the cemetery of medieval Armenian khachkars near the town of Julfa (known as Jugha in Armenian), Nakhichevan, an exclave of Azerbaijan. Claims by Armenians that Azerbaijan was undertaking a systematic campaign to destroy and remove the monuments first arose in late 1998 and those charges were renewed in 2002 and 2005./jugha/
