Yerevan: Armenian POWs
not to be prosecuted

November 10, 2010 19:13
Armenian POWs will not be prosecuted after they return to Armenia from Azerbaijan, spokesperson for the Armenian Defense Ministry David Karapetyan told NEWS.am, commenting on reports spread by the Azerbaijani press, saying Armenian prisoners do not want to return to their motherland.
The ICRC representatives and international organizations were informed that Armenian POWs will not be prosecuted. Unlike in Azerbaijan, where prisoners of war are charged after their return, in Armenia such practice is not used, he added. As to prisoners’ aspiration to leave for a third country, Karapetyan noted that under the RA Constitution Armenian citizens have right to free movement.
As NEWS.am reported earlier, Shahin Sailov, secretary of Azerbaijani Commission on POWs, Missing Person and Hostages, said that Armenian POWs do not want to return to their motherland and wish to leave for a third country.
In his turn, Armen Kaprielyan, head of a working group at the Armenian Commission on POWs, Missing Person and Hostages, told NEWS.am that the Armenian authorities have not received any document from the ICRC saying that Armenian POWs refuse to return.
