Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his British counterpart Gordon Brown discussed Turkey’s chances of joining EU after the new EU President appointment, who has thumbs down on the matter.
Obviously EU does not intend to admit Turkey in the near future. Brussels is dissatisfied with the state of democracy and human rights in Turkey. It is also related to the appointment of Belgian Premier Herman Van Rompuy who is the first EU President opposing Turkey’s membership.
“Turkey is not part of Europe and will never be one. Expansion of EU cannot take place with Turkey’s membership in the organization,” stated Rompuy. He maintains, that Europe’s fundmental values are based on the Christian ideology that may be jeopardized by membership of a large Muslim country like Turkey.
