On July 5, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Memorial to Armenian Genocide victims, Tsitsernakaberd. Hillary Clinton laid a wreath at the Memorial, paying tribute to the victims’ memory with a minute of silence.
Director of the Genocide Museum Hayk Demoyan presented the history of the Memorial’s construction, spoke of the Genocide perpetrated against Armenians as well as the humanitarian response by the U.S. and American people to the Genocide victims.
The U.S. official also inquired about the graves the Armenian martyrs killed during the Karabakh war but buried in Tsitsernakaberd. The Armenian people views the Karabakh war as a continuation of the Armenian Genocide.
Hayk Demoyan presented the American delegation with a historical medal issued by the American Near East Relief Committee in early 1920s to award the organization’s employees for their work in Armenian and Middle Eastern orphanages. Hillary Clinton was also presented with a photo depicting Armenian orphans in the American orphanage in Alexandropol (present-day Gyumri). The children in the picture stand to form a sentence: “America, we thank you.”
