Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents have reached an agreement over the return of prisoners of war, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said later on Wednesday after the trilateral meeting held in Astrakhan.
"Just minutes ago an agreement was reached between the parties over a joint statement which has a humanitarian nature, but is very important, taking into consideration the various complexities over the NK issue that exist in the Armenian and Azerbaijani relations," said Dmitry Medvedev, adding that what he means is a declaration that envisages strengthening trust so that to conduct an immediate exchange of prisoners of war and return of the bodies of the dead.
The trilateral meeting between Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev - the 7th held in this format and the 3rd this year - was initiated by Dmitry Medvedev.
"These are not ordinary meetings; they take place in hard polemics. I consider them positive, because negotiation is better than conflict," said Medvedev.
"These are not only negotiations, but also clear steps forward … What we hope is to see an agreed text at the OSCE summit in a month given good job is done. We do believe that it is possible to reach. The main work is still to be done," said he.
