Armenia to participate
in all regional energy
and economic projects,
U.S. top official says
October 04, 2010 08:44
“The slow-moving Nabucco project has received an important boost with a high-level U.S. energy official’s reiteration of Washington’s strong support for the multi-billion euro project over other planned pipelines,” Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review reports.
“The Nabucco pipeline would be a preferable pipeline politically and strategically because of what it offers to European consumers. As for initial gas coming from the Caspian through the Southern Corridor, I think it will be likely that there will be only one pipeline. Sometime in the future as more gas becomes available, and I think more gas will become available, the pipelines could become in some extent complimentary,” Richard Morningstar, U.S. Secretary of State’s Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy, told the journalists in Istanbul.
“Morningstar, however, acknowledged the most important part of realizing the so-called Southern Corridor-the planned pipelines that will carry gas from the Caspian region to Europe bypassing Russia-will depend on gas supplies,” the source sayd.
“Despite the scramble to plan pipeline routes throughout the region, Armenia has been consistently sidelined from playing any role in the process due to ongoing diplomatic conflicts with neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan,” the daily reads.
“I have warm feelings regarding Armenia. That is a shame that Armenia is not part of these projects," Morningstar said. If somehow an agreement is reached, Armenia can become a full participant in the region. And that is in everybody’s interest. It will take time, but eventually Armenia will participate in all regional energy and economic projects,” Morningstar said when asked about whether there is a specific project that the U.S. wanted Armenia to become involved in.
