The speech delivered by Turkey’s first lady wearing a headscarf at PACE provoked discussions in Turkey. Hayrun
nisa Gul, wife of Turkish President Abdullah Gul, is the first wife of a Turkish politician to address the PACE.
Hayrunnisa Gul delivered a speech at the PACE autumn session during a meeting discussing a report “on guaranteeing the right to education for children with illnesses or disabilities.”
“There are still many things to be done for women and children on human rights,” Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review quotes Turkey’s first lady.
Hayrunnisa’s beautiful ring made by Sevan Bicakci, a jeweler of Armenian origin, attracted special attention of the journalists. Traditionally Turkey’s handicraft workers were of Armenian and Greek origin, she noted. “It is our beauty and variety. Sevan is not well-known in the world. When I go abroad, I wear this ring,” Hayrunnisa Gul said.
