STOP THE PROTOCOLS

By Alicia Ghiragossian

Millions of Armenians
around the entire planet
raised their voices
with their rights stamped
on the tricolor flag.
What were they claiming?
What was their demand?

The signs of the protestors
demanded:
STOP THE PROTOCOLS.
But which protocols are these?
The ones giving the Turks
everything
and denying the Armenians
everything – as well?
And I dare to think.
Why do they call it
a step in dialogue
and friendship
when at the same time
they are distorting history
indoctrinating
millions of Turkish children
with fabricated movies
of Armenians
exterminating the Turks?

How can they talk
about good will
when their article 301
is still breathing in their laws
suffocating freedom
and punishing those
who dare to pronounce
the forbidden word:
genocide.

We refuse to shake hands
with hypocrisy.
How can we trust those
who shamelessly declare
their dream to reconstruct
the criminal Otoman Empire
exhibiting the map
already designed?

And I wonder.
What would the world say
if Germany would plan
to reestablish the Third Reich?
I myself would like to see
the high awareness
of governments and souls
on this planet
and their degree of consciousness
so to help us avoid
cruel history repeating itself.

So I raise my voice.
Yes. STOP THE PROTOCOLS!
Stop the seal of impotence!

We refuse
to bow before the enemy
and accept all the conditions
without a claim.

More over.
The Turkish government
patronizes us with an advice:
Armenia should be freed
from the Diaspora.
Why? To divide and reign?
To separate brothers?
To place a gap
and create discord
until we dissolve
in foreign soils?

The enemy does not understand
what Diaspora means
or perhaps he does too well.

When we say Armenia
we are not referring
to a piece of real estate.
We are saying
the entire race
spread around the earth.
We are talking
about the same molecules
we inherited
from our ancestors;
about the DNA sprinkled
through our sweat and tears
all over the globe.
We talk about
the same torture and anguish
the same humiliation
hidden in our veins
blended with our losses:
family
intellectuals
homeland
possessions
identity
dignity…

We share the same pain
which forced us to walk
around the world
holding in one palm
a handful of ashes
and in the other
a flag with its own voice
imploring us to recover
that which is ours.

With all our ancestral strength
we refuse to shut out the voices
of our genocide victims
demanding justice.

I swear
my heart will never legitimize a theft
so as to pronounce:
“Turkish Ararat.”
Mount Ararat is the soul
of our roots and essence.
The holy symbol
of belonging
regardless of arbitrary maps
that change the facts
with political gun powder.

We likewise refuse
the concessions on Artsakh
the ancestral land
of the Armenians.

But why are these Protocols
happening?
Do we need new wounds
when the old ones
are still open?
Do we need a new anger?
A new frustration
born in a dictatorship
that shreds hopes?
The courageous hunger strike
of our disappointed youth?

Who needs protocols
to obstruct our existence
and bury our demands?

Who needs a new Judas
to crucify our dreams?

True. Friendship and love
are the magic healers
of a broken heart.
But how can we trust
the fairness of an agreement
when one only takes
and the other only gives?

How can we talk
about good neighborhood
when the Turks want to wipe-out
a hundred years
of liability and claims?

How can the decisions
of foreign governments
that recognized the genocide
be ignored?
What do we say
to the millions who echoed our losses?

Yes.
Turkey wants to open its borders
so as to enter the European Union.
But is that deserved
when it’s robbing us
of our history?
Are we just a handful
of roaming people
with no past?

No matter where we live
our millenary lands
cannot be forcefully foreclosed.
We have fully paid for them
with centuries of hard work
sweat and blood.

So our response
is a categorical NO.
A no multiplied to infinity
and registered on every particle
of the universe. NO.
No reward should be granted
for destruction and death.
They will reap what they sowed.
Call it Biblical gospel
cause and effect
or simply karma.

We refuse to help the Turks
to reach their dreams
when they mean to murder
our own.

Some powers of this planet
- allied with the wrong -
don’t want to listen to truth
because they place convenience
above justice.
But they must know
that there is a Superior Law
higher than those man made
that inflexibly
takes care of all debts.
That Superior Law gives us
the courage and wisdom
to spell in unison
the pride and power of survival.

For that reason
the Armenians of the world united
are opening their hearts and souls.
And holding hands
in an endless chain
they are affirming an existence
full of rights
full of dignity
and their screams
are enveloping the orb
so every being can understand
that those who don’t side
with bare justice
will someday suffer
the weight of injustice.

Our voices are loud enough
to be registered in all heavens.
The Armenian Genocide
is not negotiable.
And blood is not for sale.
Never ever!
